Abolitionist, writer, orator and publisher Frederick Douglass (1818-1895) is commemorated in bronze by artist Gabriel Koren. The larger than life statue of Douglass is the centerpiece of Frederick Douglas Circle. The Circle evokes African-American quilt designs incorporated by the Harlem-based Algernon Miller. Unveiled in 2010, the plaza at the northwest corner of Central Park also marks the beginning of Frederick Douglass Boulevard.
