As America gets wider, transit companies have had to look at widening the width of seats on its rolling stock. Over the years, European and Asian transport manufacturing companies have lost New York City contracts in part to design flaws — too narrow seats. The MTA’s R62 subway cars have seats measuring 17.75 inches. New Jersey Transit’s new seats come in at 19.75 inches — up from 17.55 inches.
