The history of the Times Square balldrop began with a fireworks display on New Year’s Eve 1904 when the New York Times opened its new offices on 42nd Street. The tradition of the balldrop would begin four years later in 1908 in what was now known as Times Square. At 11:59 p.m. the six ton Waterford Crystal ball begins its 60 second journey to ring in the New Year.
