Manhattan: The classic New York cocktail. The Manhattan was the first cocktail to feature vermouth as a modifier.

What better way to get over Hump Day than by indulging in the quintessential New York cocktail — the Manhattan. Created in the 1870s, the Manhattan has undergone as many changes as the Manhattan skyline. Maraschino cherries were added at the beginning of the last century and during Prohibition Canadian whiskey was the favored base alcohol. A classic Manhattan is: 2 oz rye whiskey; 1/2 oz red vermouth and; a dash or two of bitters. Stir it up in a cocktail shaker with ice and strain into a martini glass. Add the cherry for your daily fruit intake garnish. Cheers!
