A new game of chess begins.A game of chess begins at the Chess & Checkers House in Central Park.

From Washington Square to Central Park and all points in between, chess — of all pastimes — has a unique hold on New York City. On this day in 1857 the first national association for chess was founded here. Chess in New York has no age boundaries with programs for children administered and encouraged throughout the city. Chess is also color-blind as the colors black and white matter only on the board.
