Site of first traffic fatality in NYC.A withering plaque on Central Park West marks NYC’s first traffic death.

On this day in 1899, Henry Bliss stepped off a streetcar at this location – W74th St and Central Park West – and was hit by a car. Succumbing to his injuries the next day, Bliss became “the first recorded motor vehicle fatality in the Western Hemisphere.”
